Like many other farmers, Marfa destitute lives a miserable existence. She soon realizes that by combining the plots of land farmers can survive. Also shows she enthused when the representative communist founded a "kolkhoz". Farmers are initially hostile to the idea that they do not understand. But gradually they organize themselves and accept this new way of life. The kolkhoz bought a cream separator, then the first sign of success, a great bull.
